A torn earlobe is the most common earlobe problem. In one study, heavy or pulled earrings caused 91.7% of torn lobes, and injury caused the rest.
Years of wearing heavy bridal or traditional jhumkay earrings slowly stretch the piercing until the lobe splits through.
An earring caught on clothing, a dupatta, a phone or a child’s hand can rip the lobe in a moment. The torn edges skin over and cannot rejoin alone.
Ear gauges or plugs leave large holes that do not shrink once removed. Repair closes the hole and rebuilds the lobe shape.
Dog bites, accidents and lobes that are split or missing from birth can be rebuilt with local tissue and careful stitching.
The lobe is torn through to its lower edge. Both sides of the tear are trimmed and joined, with a zig-zag at the rim.

Remove all earrings and stop aspirin if your doctor allows. Wash your hair beforehand, as the ear should stay dry for a day or two.
A small local injection numbs the lobe. The edges are trimmed and closed with fine stitches. Each ear usually takes well under an hour.
A small dressing covers the lobe and you go home straight away. Most people return to work the same or next day.

Problems are uncommon. One long-term series found the tear came back in 1.2% of lobes over 4 to 10 years. People with a keloid history need extra care.
It cannot make the lobe strong enough for very heavy earrings again. The new piercing should sit away from the scar line.
