Laser assisted liposuction passes a thin laser fibre under the skin to melt and loosen fat, which is then removed by suction. It is still surgery, done through small cuts.
A 2018 review of 7 studies found better skin tightening and fat reduction in some of them, but rated the overall evidence as weak and open to bias.
The chin, upper arms, knees and bra line hold small pockets of fat that resist diet. These areas suit a smaller, more precise procedure than a large liposuction.

Keep your weight steady before treatment. Stop smoking 4 to 6 weeks before, and stop aspirin and herbal supplements 2 weeks before, unless told otherwise.
Numbing fluid is injected first. The laser fibre then passes under the skin to soften the fat, and a thin cannula removes it through the same small cuts.
For small areas you usually go home the same day. A compression garment is fitted before you leave, and the small cuts may leak fluid for a day.

Wear the compression garment for 4 to 6 weeks, day and night at first. Walk several times a day and drink plenty of water while the area heals.
The extra risk compared with standard liposuction is heat. In one series of 1,734 patients, a single small burn occurred, about 0.06%. Dr. Umbreen explains every risk before consent.
It cannot remove large volumes of fat in one session or lift skin that hangs. It does not treat cellulite, stretch marks or fat deep inside the abdomen.
