Gynecomastia, also spelled gynaecomastia, is growth of firm breast gland tissue in men. When the chest is enlarged by fat alone, it is called pseudogynecomastia, and the treatment differs.
Depending on age and how it is measured, studies find it in 32% to 65% of men, which makes it a very common male chest concern.
It appears in about 38% of boys aged 10 to 16, peaking at 65% around 14. Most cases settle on their own: 73% within 2 years and 92% within 3.
In one study of adult men, anabolic steroids caused 13.9% of cases, low testosterone 11.1% and other medicines 7.8%. No cause was found in 45.1%.
Extra body fat builds up on the chest and also raises hormones that feed gland growth. Many men have a mix of fat and true gland.
Some men have a small, firm disc of gland just behind the nipple that pushes it forward, visible through gym shirts even when they are slim.
