A neck lift, or lower rhytidectomy, removes loose neck skin and tightens the platysma, the thin muscle sheet under it. Muscle repair is called platysmaplasty and skin removal is called cervicoplasty.
Surgeons describe a youthful neck as one where the angle between the jaw and the neck sits at about 105 to 120 degrees.
Neck skin thins and loses elastic fibres with age and sun exposure. It starts to hang in a soft fold under the chin that moves when you turn your head or speak.
