Breast reduction, medically called reduction mammoplasty, removes breast tissue, fat and skin to make the breasts smaller, lighter and higher. The nipple is moved up to suit the new shape.
It is a different operation from breast cancer surgery. It reshapes healthy breasts and is not used to diagnose or treat a lump.

Straps dig painful grooves into the shoulders. In summer, sweat under the breast fold causes rashes and skin infections that keep returning.

Smoking slows wound healing, so stop 4 to 6 weeks before surgery. Stop aspirin 2 weeks before and buy two soft, front-fastening sports bras.
It is done under general anesthesia and takes 2 to 3 hours. Tissue is removed from the lower breast and the nipple is raised on its own blood supply.
Most women stay in hospital for 1 or 2 nights. Thin drains may remove fluid and are taken out after 1 to 2 days, before you go home.
