Buttock augmentation, also called gluteal augmentation, increases the size and curve of the buttocks. The two main methods are a Brazilian butt lift, which moves your own fat, and silicone buttock implants.
In a Brazilian butt lift, fat is first removed by liposuction from areas such as the waist and back, so the waist also looks slimmer.
Some people are born with little buttock projection, so trousers hang flat at the back. Exercise builds the muscle underneath but often cannot add a rounder outline.
A dip on the side of each hip, between the waist and thigh, comes from how the pelvis bone is shaped. Placing fat into the dip smooths the curve from waist to leg.
After major weight loss or pregnancy, the buttocks can look deflated and sit lower. Restoring volume brings back a fuller shape, and a lift may be added if skin hangs.
One side may be smaller or shaped differently from birth or after an injection or injury. Placing more fat on the smaller side improves balance.
Purified fat is injected only into the layer under the skin, never into or under the muscle. This one rule is what has made the procedure much safer.
A soft solid silicone implant is placed through a cut in the crease between the buttocks. It suits slim patients who do not have enough spare fat.
Loose, hanging skin is removed through a cut along the upper edge of the buttocks. It lifts the shape after major weight loss but does not add volume on its own.

Keep your weight stable and stop smoking 4 to 6 weeks before surgery. Stop aspirin and herbal supplements 2 weeks before, and buy a soft cushion for the weeks after.
It is done under general anesthesia. Fat is removed, purified and placed in many small amounts, or an implant is set in its pocket through a hidden cut.
You go home the same day or after one night, wearing a compression garment. From the very first night you avoid lying on your back.

The most serious risk of a Brazilian butt lift is fat entering a large vein in the buttock muscle. In 2017, deaths were estimated at about 1 in 3,000. After surgeons adopted the safety rule above, a survey found about 1 in 14,952.
It cannot change the shape of the pelvis bone or give a very large result safely in one session. Loose, hanging skin also needs a lift rather than more volume.
